Choosing a College Major The most important piece of advice in this article follows this sentence, so, are you ready for it The advice: Don’’t panic. I know it’’s easier said than done, but I can’’t tell you how many students I have advised since the time that I have been a professor that seem in a state of panic if they are uncertain of their major, let alone a career. Choosing a major, thinking about a career, getting an education — these are the things college is all about. Yes, there are some students who arrive on campus and know exactly their major and career ambitions, but the majority of students do not, thus there is no need to rush into a decision about your major as soon as you step on campus. And guess what A majority of students in all colleges and universities change their major at least once in their college careers; and many change their major several times over the course of their college career. This article is all about giving you some pointers and direction — some steps for you to take — in your journey toward discovering that ideal career path for you. But it is a journey, so make sure you spend some time thinking about it before making a decision. And don’’t be discouraged if you still don’’t have a major the first time you take this journey...your goal should be narrowing your focus from all possible majors to a few areas that you can then explore in greater depth. Way back when I was an undergraduate, I was a dual major in marketing and magazine journalism. Today I am a college professor, which brings me to another piece of general advice before you begin your journey: your major in college is important for your first job after graduation, but studies show that most people will change careers — yes, careers — about four or five times over the course of their lives — and no major exists that can prepare you for that! The first stop on your journey should be an examination or self-assessment of your interests. What types of things excite you What types of jobs or careers appeal to you The second stop on your journey is an examination of your abilities. What are your strengths What are your weaknesses What kind of skills do you have You can begin this self-examination by looking at the courses you took in high school. What were your best subjects Is there a pattern there What kinds of extracurricular activities did you participate in while in high school What kinds of things did you learn from part-time or summer jobs The third stop on your journey involves examining what you value in work. Examples of values include: helping society, working under pressure, stability, security, status, pacing, working alone or with groups, having a positive impact on others, and many others. The fourth stop on your journey is career exploration. There are many schools that offer "what can I do with a major in " fact sheets. You can also learn more about various occupations, including future trends, by searching the Bureau of Labor Statistics — Occupational Outlook. The fifth stop on your journey is the reality check. You need to honestly evaluate your options. Do you really value physicians and have an interest in being a doctor, but have little skills in science Do you have a strong interest in the arts, but your family is convinced you will become a CPA like your father There are often ways to get around some of the obstacles during the reality check, but it is still important to face these obstacles and be realistic about whether you can get around them. The sixth and final stop on your journey is the task of narrowing your choices and focusing on choosing a major. Based on all your research and self-assessment of the first five stops on your journey, you should now have a better idea of the careers/majors you are not interested in pursuing as well as a handful of potential careers/majors that do interest you. What are some other resources for helping you get more information about a major and/or a career Take advantage of: Your professors, including your academic adviser — talk with your professors, whether you have taken a class with them or not. Any of them have worked in the field in which they teach and all are experts about careers and career opportunities. Your classmates, especially upperclassmen — these are the folk who are deep into their major, perhaps already having had an internship or gone through job interviews. Use them as a resource to gather more information. Your college’’s alumni — unless your college was just founded, your school probably has a deep and varied group of alums, many of whom like to talk with current students. They can also be a resource to gather more information about careers. Your college’’s career center — almost always under-appreciated, these folk have such a wealth of information at their fingertips that it is a shame more students don’’t take advantage of them and not just in your senior year

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Many foreigners who have not visited Britain call all the inhabitants English, for they are used to thinking of the British Isles as England. In fact, the British Isles contain a variety of peoples and only the people of England call themselves as English. The others refer themselves as Welsh, Scottish, or Irish, as the case may be; they are often slightly annoyed as being classified as English. The Highlands The drive from England to Scotland provides the traveler with many pleasant changes of scenery. As it is a fairly long journey, it is good to be able to travel with a friend who can take turns with you at the wheel. A patriotic Scotsman travelling with an English friend may tell him he is going to see, in the Highlands, the finest scenery in the world. This may sound exaggerated, but on arriving in the Highlands most people really agree that the scenery is indeed magnificent. The Highlands are, as the name implies, the hilly or mountainous region of the country; they form the greater part of the western half of Scotland north of Glasgow. On the first night in Scotland a tourist may choose to put up at a hotel in the little town of Callander, which is known as one of "the Gateways" to the Highlands. On the following day he can set out to see the various lakes in the neighborhood, and will be delighted with the wild and romantic aspect of the countryside. When he returns to his hotel he will be glad to eat a "high tea". This is a meal which, in Scotland and many parts of northern England, takes place of tea and dinner. It consists of one substantial course, such as one would have at dinner, followed by bread-and-butter, with jam or honey, and some kind of cake or cakes; tea is drunk with the meal, which is taken at about six o’clock in the evening. One has a light supper late in the evening. The next morning many tourists journey on to the west coast, passing on their way Loch Lomond, one of the largest and most famous of the Scottish lakes. The road twists and turns, dips and climbs, but is not dangerous. The greatest hazard is the black-faced sheep: these animals are as active as goats, and frequently wander recklessly into the road. The tourists may also see a herd of long-haired Highland cattle, which look savage but are no more so than ordinary cattle. Eventually the road runs parallel with the sea, along a coastline fringed with little islands and made ragged with rocky bays.Edinburgh Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a fine old city built partly in the valley of the River Leitfi and partly on the rolling hills which surround it. The city is dominated by the castle, an ancient fortress (要塞) standing on the summit of a massive rock, which has been the scene of many battles throughout centuries of Scottish history. Today what remains of the original castle is preserved as a museum piece. The road from the castle to the royal palace of Holyroodhouse is known as "The Royal Mile". It is a very old road running through the oldest part of the city where there are many famous historic houses and narrow lanes called "closes". The newer part of the city lies north of the famous Princes Street, which is the widest and most impressive of the many wide streets and elegant square that are to be found in Edinburgh. The trains bringing visitors to Edinburgh run right into the heart of the city. Climbing up the steps from Waverley Station, the visitor is greeted by a blaze of color in Princes Street Gardens and a splendid view down the mile-long length of Princes Street itself. The grey stone buildings that line one side of Princes Street have been described as "a series of palaces"; they are, in fact, department stores and shops. In some shops you can see beautiful display of Scottish cloth, Edinburgh rock and, of course, Scotch whisky. About half way along Princes Street is the tallest tower in the city—a monumental memorial to Sir Walter Scott—and a little further on is the Floral Clock. This unique clock, made entirely of growing flowers, is always in full bloom during the Edinburgh Festival. For three weeks every summer, Edinburgh is alive with excited festival-goers and performers who come from all over the world, and the city is gay with flags and decorations. This international festival of the arts fills every theatre, concert hall, exhibition gallery and assembly room with performances of opera, dancing, music, plays, films and puppet shows. The festival is not limited to indoor activities: every weekday the noise of music as the Scottish pipers march along Princes Street. But the most spectacular event of the festival is undoubtedly the military tattoo (军乐团). This takes place under searchlights with the floodlit castle in the background. Nowhere could one find a natural setting more impressive and appropriate.Wales—Land of Song

{{B}}Cod in Trouble{{/B}}A. In 1992, the devastating collapse of the cod stocks off the east coast of Newfoundland forced the Canadian government to take drastic measures and close the fishery. Over 40,000 people lost their jobs, communities are still struggling to recover and the marine ecosystem is still in a state of collapse. The disintegration of this vital fishery sounded a warning bell to governments around the world who were shocked that a relatively-sophisticated, scientifically-based fisheries management program, not unlike their own, could have gone so wrong. The Canadian government ignored warnings that their fleets were employing destructive fishing practices and refused to significantly reduce quotas citing the loss of jobs as too great a concern.B. In the 1950s Canadian and US east coast waters provided an annual 100,000 tons in cod catches rising to 800,000 by 1970. This over fishing led to a catch of only 300,000 tons by 1975. Canada and the US reacted by passing legislation to extend their national jurisdictions over marine-living resources out to 200 nautical miles and catches naturally declined to 139,000 tons in 1980. However the Canadian fishing industry took over and restarted the over fishing and catches rose again until, from 1985, it was the Canadians who were landing more than 250,000 tons of northern cod annually. This exploitation ravaged the stocks and by 1990 the catch was so low (29,000 tons) that in 1992 (121/2000 tons) Canada had to ban all fishing in east coast waters. In a fishery that had for over a century yielded a quarter-million ton catches, there remained a biomass of less than 1700 tons and the Fisheries Department also predicted that, even with an immediate recovery, stocks need at least 15 years before they would be healthy enough to withstand previous levels of fishing.C. The devastating fishing came from massive investment poured into constructing huge "draggers". Draggers haul enormous nets held open by a combination of huge steel plates and heavy chains and rollers that plough the ocean bottom. They drag up anything in the way, inflicting immense damage, destroying critical habitat and contributing to the destabilization of the northern cod ecosystem. The draggers targeted huge aggregations of cod while they were spawning, a time when the fish population is highly vulnerable to capture. Excessive trawling on spawning stocks became highly disruptive to the spawning process, and ecosystem. In addition, the trawling activity resulted in a physical dispersion of eggs leading to a higher fertilization failure. Physical and chemical damage to larvae caused by the trawling action also reduced their chances of survival. These draggers are now banned forever from Canadian waters.D. Canadian media often cite excessive fishing by overseas fleets, primarily driven by the Capitalist ethic, as the primary cause of the fishing out of the north Atlantic cod stocks. Many nations took fish off the coast of Newfoundland and all used deep-sea trawlers, and many often blatantly exceeded established catch quotas and treaty agreements. There can be little doubt that non-North-American-fishing was a contributing factor in the cod stock collapse, and that the capitalist dynamics that were at work in Canada were all too similar for the foreign vessels and companies. But all of the blame cannot be put there, no matter how easy it is to do, as it does not account for the management of the resources.E. Who was to blame As the exploitation of the Newfoundland fishery was so predominantly guided by the government, we can argue that a fishery is not a private area, as the fisher lacks management fights normally associated with property and common property. The state had appropriated the property, and made all of the management decisions. Fishermen get told who can fish, what they can fish, and essentially, what to do with the fish once it is caught. In this regard then, when a resource such as the Newfoundland fishery collapses, it is more a tragedy of government negligence than a tragedy of the general public.F. Following the 1992’s ban on northern cod fishing and most other species, an estimated 30,000 people that had already lost their jobs after the 1992 Northern Cod Moratorium took effect, were joined by an additional 12,000 fishermen and plant workers. With more than forty thousand people out of jobs, Newfoundland became an economic disaster area, as processing plants shut down, and vessels from the smallest dory to the monster draggers were made idle or sold overseas at bargain prices. Several hundred Newfoundland communities were devastated.G. Europeans need only look across the North Atlantic to see what could be in store for their cod fishery. In Canada they were too busy with making plans, setting expansive goals, and then allocating fish, and lots of it, instead of making sound business plans to

Six years later, in an about-face, the FBI admits that federal agents fired tear gas canisters capable of causing a fire at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas in 1993. But the official said the firing came several hours before the structure burst into flames, killing 80 people including the Davidians’ leader, David Koresh."In looking into this, we’ve come across information that shows some canisters that can be deemed pyrotechnic in nature were fired—hours before the fire started," the official said. "Devices were fired at the bunker, not at the main structure where the Davidians were camped out."The Federal Bureau of Investigation maintains it did not start what turned to be a series of fiery bursts of flames that ended a 51-day standoff between branch members and the federal government. "This doesn’t change the bottom line that David Koresh started the fire and the government did not," the official said. "It simple shows that devices that could probably be flammable were used in the early morning hours."The law enforcement official said the canisters were fired not at the main structure where the Davidian members were camped out but at the nearby underground bunker. They bounced off the bunker’s concrete roof and landed in an open field well, the official said. The canisters were fired at around 6 a.m. , and the fire that destroyed the wooden compound started around noon, the official said. The official also added that other tear gas canisters used by agent that day were not flammable or potentially explosive. While Coulson denied the grenades played a role in starting the fire, his statement marked the first time that any U.S. government official has publicly contradicted the government’s position that federal agents used nothing on the final day of the siege at Waco that could have sparked the fire that engulfed the compound. The cause of the fiery end is a major focus of an ongoing inquiry by the Texas Rangers into the Waco siege. After reading the passage, how much do you know about the compound near Waco ()

The age of gilded youth is over. Today’s under-thirties are the first generation for a century who can expect a lower living standard than their parents. Research into the lifestyles and prospects of people who were born since 1970 shows that they are likely to face a lifetime of longer working hours, lower job security and higher taxes than the previous generation. When they leave work late in the evening, they will be more likely to return to a small rented flat than to a house of their own. When, eventually, they retire, their pensions are far lower in real terms than those of their immediate forebears. These findings are revealed in a study of the way the ageing of Britain’s population is affecting different generations. Anthea Tinker, professor of social gerontology (老人学) at King’s College London, who carried out much of the work, said the growth of the proportion of people over 50 had reversed the traditional flow of wealth from older to younger generations. "Today’s older middle-aged and elderly are becoming the new winners," she said. "They made relatively small contributions in tax but now make relatively big claims on the welfare system. Generations born in the last three to four decades face the prospect of handing over more than a third of their lifetime’s earnings to care for them." The surging number of older people, many living alone, has also increased demand for property and pushed up house prices. While previous generations found it easy to raise a mortgage, today’s under-thirties have to live with their parents or rent. If they can afford to buy a home it is more likely to be a flat than a house. Laura Lenox-Conyngham, 28, grew up in a large house and her mother did not need to work. Unlike her wealthy parents, she graduated with student and postgraduate loan debts of £13,000. She now earns about £20,000 a year, preparing food to be photographed for magazines. Her home is a one-bedroom flat in central London and she sublets(转租) the lounge sofa-bed to her brother. "My father took pity and paid off my student debts," she said. "But I still have no pension and no chance of buying a property for at least a couple of years--and then it will be something small in a bad area. My only hope is the traditional one of meeting a rich man." Tinker’s research reveals Lenox-Conyngham is representative of many young professionals, especially in London, Manchester, Edinburgh end Bristol. In what way does Laura Lanox-Conyngham make her living

The Internet has spawned (大量输出) a sick new craze: violence porn. Daniel Pearl and Nick Berg had three awful things in common. Both were Jewish Americans who were kidnapped by Islamic terrorists. Both were beheaded (斩首). And both had their excruciating (剧烈的) deaths recorded and then replayed thousands, perhaps millions, of times over the Internet. One of the websites that featured the killing of Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter abducted in Pakistan in 2002, was also among the first to post the footage of Berg’’s execution two years later in Iraq. " Yes, we have the American beheading video," its home page proudly declared. Is this a website sponsored by militant Islamists Nope. It’’s a site based here in the United States with the sole mission of celebrating stomach-turning violence. Under the motto "Can You Handle Life " the site displays hundreds of images of dead, dying and mangled human beings. Some of its recent offerings were listed under titles such as "Shocking Murder Images," "Suicide by Grenade" and "People Who Drowned". The Internet is full of such fare. Another site boasts that it "collects images and information... to present the viewer with a truly unpleasant experience. " True enough, since among the site’’s recent photos was one of a man being hit by a car, and another of the grotesque remains of a person killed by a shotgun blast. Then there’’s a "celebrity morgue" site that posts photos of famous people dead at crime scenes and on autopsy tables. There’’s even a website that reviews violence-filled sites, praising one for " videos of people jumping from buildings, dying by fire and explosion and guns, and otherwise suffering," and another for showing "disease, executions, murder, deformity, vivisection, accidents, genocide." You can sense the reviewer’’s glee when he writes, "OK, gross-out fans, strap on your seat belts!" It’’s not news to anyone that the Internet is awash (泛滥的) with pornography. But videos like the Nick Berg murder are a reminder that there’’s something even more disturbing now spreading across the Web. Call it "violence porn" —the latest degradation of our popular culture, in which gruesome (毛骨悚然的) injuries and deaths are glorified and presented in wincing (抽搐的) detail. Such imagery leads to " an increasing desensitization (迟钝) to violence which carries over into the real world," says Dave Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family. More bluntly, it’’s like an invitation to mass psychosis. And make no mistake, viewing true-life violence is catching on. According to the operator of one of these sites, his traffic has multiplied over the last several years from a few thousand visitors a day to more than 150,000. With a simple click of the mouse, anyone can take a gander (一瞥) at someone else’’s nightmare. The site that posted the shotgun victim says that 250,000 individuals peruse their web pages each day. When one schoolteacher wrote the site to complain that students had bookmarked it on their computers, the posted reply said, "The Net is not a baby-sitter!" and blamed the problem on children "roaming the Net unsupervised. " Meanwhile, a recent University of Michigan study revealed that steady exposure as a child to violent screen images can make young adults more likely to turn to violence themselves. "I have no doubt that our culture today has a coarsening effect," says Joanne Cantor, a psychologist at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. " The more you live in a world where violence and hostility are the norm, the more you adopt a hostile mental framework. " Some even suggest that the pictures of American soldiers posed smiling alongside abused Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison are a reflection of the increased callousness in our society. One columnist wrote in New Hampshire’’s Union Leader newspaper; "We’’d be missing a few dots if we didn’’t admit that the culture that birthed our young soldiers has dumbed down the definition of human dignity." But the violence porn peddlers don’’t care. Many are turning a big profit, thanks to ads on their websites, as well as videos, T-shirts and other merchandise. They also dress up their voyeurism (偷窥癖) in free-speech clothing. "Privacy rights have to take a second place to First Amendment free-speech rights," says Lawrence Walters, a lawyer who has represented several violence and porn websites. "The deceased, quite frankly, don’’t have a continued privacy right." Good to know. But whatever happened to respecting the dead And what about relatives of people who turn up in gruesome pictures on the Internet One website heard from a family claiming a photo showed the mangled body of their nephew, who had killed himself by getting in the path of a train. The site posted this cruel response: "We ask that, in the future, this family conduct their suicides in a less public manner." Some Internet filters can help shield children from sites like this, but face it; It’’s ea

The Institution of Marriage The Indians, as all other communities of human beings in every age, in every clime (地域), and in every possible condition in respect to civilization or barbarism, have done, lived in families. That is to say, the husband, the wife, and the children formed a natural group and dwelt together in common. The children were under the care of themselves and the husband and wife, once joined, remained united for life. Some persons have imagined that the institution of marriage is an artificial institution, adopted by society as an arrangement proved by experiment to be, on the whole, most advantageous to man. But the universality of this institution proves that it is of higher origin. It is a part of man’’s nature, considered as an animal, that he should have one female partner, and that the union which binds him to his partner, when once she is chosen, should endure for life. It is curious to observe that the provision of nature by which man is led everywhere, and under all circumstances, to the institution of marriage as the foundation of the social state, is in accordance with a general principle which pervades the whole animal creation. The principle is this:General Law of Pairing In all cases where the nurture of the young of any animal, for any reason, requires more than the mother herself alone can do for them, it seems to be a general law of nature in respect to such animals that they are provided with instincts which lead them to pair. A male and female unite, and they remain united until the young no longer need their joint assistance. Thus birds pair, because it is necessary that both should co-operate to build the nest, and also that the father should bring food while the mother sits upon the eggs to hatch them. And lions pair, for one must remain and take care of the young, while the other goes away on distant excursions to procure food. But sheep and other such animals do not pair, for their young do not require the joint attention of father and mother. In respect to the duration of the union thus formed, the principle is that it continues as long as the necessity for it continues; that is, as long as the brood of young ones require the united efforts of both father and mother to protect them. Then — at least so it is supposed in the case of birds — when the season is over and the young ones are grown up to maturity, the union is terminated, the pair separate, and each, at the commencement (开始) of a new season, chooses a mate again.Application to the Case of Man Now, in the case of man, the young require the aid of both parents for their nurture and protection; and inasmuch as each requires this attention for ten or twelve years at least, and as during the time while the first-born is attaining this age others succeed, the period during which the conjoined effort of the parents are required is protracted (拖延), without intermission, during the whole of their lives — that is, through all the portion of it during which their natural vigor continues unimpaired. It follows from this, and from the fact that the numbers of the sexes are equal, that according to the analogy of nature we should have expected that the human species would be provided with instincts leading them to unite in pairs, and to continue so united for life. We find, accordingly, that this is the fact everywhere. The marriage laws of all human societies are consequently made to guard and protect the marriage institution — not to establish it. The institution itself is founded in instincts and principles of our nature existing antecedent to all law. Indeed, the family institution, instead of waiting to be established by law, is often even more important and more prominent in low states of civilization than in high. It is most powerful where laws are weakest. Instead of being created by law and thus following it in the order or time, it is itself rather the origin and source of law. So far as we have any opportunity to trace back the forms of social organization to their source, we find them arising usually, in the first instance, from that primordial (原始的) and elementary bond, the union of husband with wife, which springs at once from the physical constitution and innate instincts of man, and is the germ from which all other systems of authority and subordination come. It was eminently so among the Indians. They lived in families throughout the length and breadth of the land — the families of the same connection being grouped together in tribes. They lived generally in peace, and were engaged in labors of patient industry for providing food and clothing for themselves and their children. The Indians were different from other communities of human beings in that they didn’’t live in families.

I was just a boy when my father brought me to Harlem for the first time, almost 50 years ago. We stayed at the Hotel Theresa, a grand brick structure at 125th Street and Seventh Avenue. Once, in the hotel restaurant, my father pointed out Joe Louis. He even got Mr. Brown, the hotel manager, to introduce me to him, a bit paunchy but still the champ as far as I was concerned. Much has changed since then. Business and real estate are booming. Some say a new renaissance is under way. Others decry what they see as outside forces running roughshod over the old Harlem. New York meant Harlem to me, and as a young man I visited it whenever I could. But many of my old haunts are gone. The Theresa shut down in 1996. National chains that once ignored Harlem now anticipate yuppie money and want pieces of this prime Manhattan real estate. So here I am on a hot August afternoon, sitting in a Starbucks that two years ago opened a block away from the Theresa, snatching at memories between sips of high-priced coffee. I am about to open up a piece of the old Harlem ― the New York Amsterdam News ― when a tourist asking directions to Sylvia’’s, a prominent Harlem restaurant, penetrates my daydreaming. He’’s carrying a book: Touring Historic Harlem. History. I miss Mr. Michaux’’s bookstore, his House of Common Sense, which was across from the Theresa. He had a big billboard out front with brown and black faces painted on it that said in large letters: "World History Book Outlet on 2,000,000,000 Africans and Nonwhite Peoples." An ugly state office building has swallowed that space. I miss speaker like Carlos Cooks, who was always on the southwest corner of 125th and Seventh, urging listeners to support Africa. Harlem’’s powerful political electricity seems unplugged ― although the streets are still energized, especially by West African immigrants. Hardworking southern newcomers formed the bulk of the community back in the 1920s and ’’30s, when Harlem renaissance artists, writers, and intellectuals gave it a glitter and renown that made it the capital of black America. From Harlem, W.E.B. DuBois. Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson, Zora Neal Hurston, and others helped power America’’s cultural influence around the world. By the 1970s and ’’80s drugs and crime had ravaged parts of the community. And the life expectancy for men in Harlem was less than that of men in Bangladesh. Harlem had become a symbol of the dangers of inner-city life. Now, you want to shout "Lookin’’ good!" at this place that has been neglected for so long. Crowds push into Harlem USA, a new shopping centre on 125th, where a Disney store shares space with HMY Records, the New York Sports Club, and a nine-screen Magic Johnson theatre complex. Nearby, a Rite Aid drugstore also opened. Maybe part of the reason Harlem seems to be undergoing a rebirth is that it is finally getting what most people take for granted. Harlem is also part of an "empowerment zone"―a federal designation aimed at fostering economic growth that will bring over half a billion in federal, state, and local dollars. Just the shells of once elegant old brownstones now can cost several hundred thousand dollars. Rents are skyrocketing. An improved economy, tougher law enforcement, and community efforts against drugs have contributed to a 60 percent drop in crime since 1993. From the passage we can infer that, generally speaking, the author
